President signs Hungary’s armed defence plan
President Katalin Novák, commander-in-chief of the armed forces under the constitution, signed Hungary’s armed defence plan at the defence ministry on Tuesday, the chief of the Hungarian army said.
The country’s armed defence plan is required to be in conformity with the national defence plan, Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi told public media after the ceremony, noting that it is the duty of Hungary’s president to know and sign the document.
He said that
the Hungarian Armed Forces is tasked with analysing the challenges that may affect the country, ranging from the smallest incident to war.
Major General István Kun Szabó, the Head of the Defence Directorate of the Office of the President of the Republic, noted that
the president on Tuesday signed a defence plan which had been revised in light of the National Security Strategy adopted in 2020 and the National Military Strategy approved the following year.
Hungary’s Fundamental Law declares that the basic task of the Hungarian Armed Forces is the military protection of the country’s independence, territorial integrity and borders. Its further duties include fulfilling joint defence and peacekeeping obligations arising from international treaties.
Hungary’s defence plan defines the tasks of the Hungarian Armed Forces in maintaining law and order, and in protecting the country’s critical infrastructure and cyberspace. The plan is submitted by the defence minister and approved by the country’s president.
